Cunky Spurtle

Music, Text, and Visual Compositions

Welcome to Cunky Spurtle. Years of experience in music performance, composition, writing, painting and drawing eventually led to the inception of this unusual collaborative duo. With a musical and visual curiosity in unexpected combinations of sound and colour, we strive to inspire music, text, and art lovers through work that creates questions.

Collaborating since 1991

Elisabeth Kelvin’s creative practice blends the visual with the aural – she paints what she hears and plays what she sees. She received a Bachelor of Music from the Sydney Conservatorium, and a Masters then Doctorate of Musical Arts from Michigan State University. Early career experiences as an orchestral and chamber musician alerted Elisabeth to the importance and potential of the collective in music making. As a lecturer at Victorian College of the Arts, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and later in the regional Australian center of Tamworth and working with contemporary Indigenous artists, she was introduced to the role and meaning of place in social connectivity and symbolic representative art. She teaches music, art, and dance and – along with being a founding member of Gentle Enquiry – performs with Ozmosis, Vienna Improvisors Orchestra, Free Forms-Just Music and Trio Amacord+.

Elisabeth launched her visual arts practice in 2000, and has staged solo exhibitions and participated in collaborative shows in USA, Australia, and Austria. She became an active member of One+2 Artist Studios, Sydney in 2009. Her visual arts work, abstractions of body movement and music, encompasses a range of media including oil, watercolour, pastel, ink and mixtures. She exhibits her art at galleries and festivals and business. Recent career highlights include a well-received solo exhibition, Harbour City Tones and Colours, at Salerno Gallery (Sydney), and a series of solo and group shows in Galerie Contemplor GalerieTakt, Reinl Galerie, and in grand palatial halls such as Historisches Volksmuseum (Konstante Art Fair, Vienna) or intimate wine bars like Vinotek Rochus. Her visual art exhibitions include performance elements as she and other musicians play her paintings.

John Plankenhorn is composer, teacher, writer, bassist, and interdisciplinary music educator. He holds a Master of Music Composition, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mi., USA and a Bachelor of Music - majoring in music theory with a minor in philosophy, Ashland University, Ohio, USA. Between 1999 and 2014, he co-founded Titan Chunky Compositions, an interdisciplinary arts practice, Australia, through which he led the new music ensemble, moist, produced several albums of his compositions, and held masterclasses throughout NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania.
